Fall Alert Your Guide to Medical Alerts

The pros and cons of fall detection medical alert systems

by admin on September 28, 2011

Fall detection is a new technology that allows medical alert systems to detect when a senior has a fall. The pro to this service is that a senior doesn’t even have to press their help button to alert that they have fallen. While this is a great idea and a technology to be excited about, there are a number of cons to fall detection.

First off, getting fall detection with medical alert systems generally cost more. A lot more. Rather than paying somewhere in the $26.00 range per month, you may pay upwards of $60.00 monthly for a fall detection service. Money is only sometimes a factor in these decisions though, and obviously safety comes first! The biggest con for using a fall detection service is false alarms. These systems often detect when a senior is bending over or just laying down. A number of quick sudden movements can simulate a fall and lead to a false alarm, Seniors sometimes get frustrated with false alarms and may be less likely to wear their medical alert systems button if false alarms become common. In my experience, seniors do better with a more straightforward system – where they simply press a button to get help.

Like everything, you take the good with the bad. Fall detection may be necessary for your mother or father’s situation – even with the potential high rate of false alarms. So figure out what works best for you and your parent!
