Fall Alert Your Guide to Medical Alerts

Fall detection and other “add on” services

by admin on October 11, 2011

Medical alert companies often offer special “add on” features and services with their service. One good example of this is fall detection. In some situations these features can be helpful (or maybe necessary), but for most seniors they tend to work against the overall goal of safety. Most seniors do much better with a simple medical alert service. They just press a button, speak to the operator over a speaker box and get the help they need!

One of the more expensive features out there is a pendant with a speaker built in. Your mom would use her pendant to communicate with her monitoring service rather than the speaking to a speaker box. Now this sounds great – just like fall detection does, but you have to weigh the pros and cons. When you put a speaker in the pendant – it automatically makes the pendant water-resistant and not waterproof. These speaker pendants are not to be worn in the shower or tub. Also that pendant will have a battery that needs to be charged up and changed once a month – other medical alert pendants batteries last up to 5 years! So weigh these into your decision. Is your mom able to remember to change those batteries, or is that too much of a hassle? Ultimately, you know what’s best for her situation! It’s your decision to make :)
