So you are looking at getting your parents a medical alert and want to make sure that it is always working when they need it the most? That’s easy, but it does involve effort on your part. The only way to know for sure that your parents’ medical alert is working at all times is to test it regularly. Most companies recommend that you test once a month. Marking this on a calendar is the best way to remember. If you use a smart phone, you can even program it to remind you to test once a month. There are just so many things that can go wrong in your own home. For example, someone could unplug the system while cleaning and forget to plug it back in, someone could move the system and plug it in wrong, or the phone jack itself could stop working one day. Or as rare as it is, the medical alert equipment could stop working properly after a few years… Testing regularly allows you to catch any potential problems before you find them the hard way. Also it is smart to test anytime the machine is unplugged and plugged back in again – and even after the power in the house goes out and comes back on.
